Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890)Attributed: Two Sketches: Tree Studies (2 drawings), iron gall ink, on paper dated to the 19th century, signed; Orchard in Blossom, iron gall ink, on laid paper dated to the 19th century, signed. Orchard in Blossom is a possible study/sketch for his 1889 painting of an orchard in Arles.
Vincent van Gogh  was a Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes and still lifes.
br>Both of these drawings are executed in materials which the artist was known to use. The lot is accompanied by a conservator's report identifying the ink and dating the paper.

Tree 3.5x3.3" paper; Orchard 4 3/10 x 10 1/2" paper.

The drawing was reported to have been purchased from Mark Nixon and his long-time business partner, Baron Herbert Hischemoeller van Kamphuyzen (of the Netherlands and Beverly Hills, California). Nixon built the famous "Kasteel Kamphuyzen," a 6,000 square foot home in Beverly Hills, California, naming the home after his partner, the Baron van Kamphuyzen. Van Kamphuyzen, who died in 1991, immigrated to the United States in the 1940's, presumably bringing art and antiques from his family's estate in Holland. He became a U.S. citizen in 1946. Van Kamphuyzen, who was educated at Eton in England, was an aide to Lord Baden Powell, and later became honorary consul general of the Ivory Coast. The consignor's family was friendly with Nixon for more than 30 years and the present offering is believed to have been acquired directly from Mark Nixon by a member of the consignor's family, now deceased.
