African Tribal Art: Toma People: Female Figure, Guinea. The sculpture represents a female figure with beautiful scarification on her breasts and torso, pierced ear lobes, cowrie shell eyes, and an impressive display of teeth. The figure wears a cowrie shell adorned leather cap, topped with a tuft of animal hair. There is a double string od beads around her neck, and her waist is surrounded with a string of blue beads and a tattered rough-fiber cloth. The face shows the patination of libations. Overall there is a dark brown patina. The estimated age of this piece is late 19th Century.
