Paul Gauguin, Attributed (French, 1848-1903): When Will You Marry. Oil on sack cloth, framed. Lovari fizetendo is written in pencil on the top stretcher bar. Possible study or work up for a later painting.

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a French Post-Impressionist artist known for his innovative and influential contributions to the world of art. Gauguin initially pursued a successful career as a stockbroker but ultimately devoted himself entirely to painting. He is renowned for his vibrant use of color, bold experimentation with form, and exploration of non-Western cultures, particularly his time spent in Tahiti. Gauguin's artistic vision, marked by his search for spiritual and emotional expression, laid the groundwork for the Symbolist and Primitivist movements and continues to inspire artists to this day.

great aged condition; light surface grime and scattered insect leavings; upper center of the canvas is dented with paint loss; craquelure through the surface of most of the canvas, more heavily concentrated in the center.
