Mori Ippo (Mori Keishi) (Japanese, 1798-1871): Tortoise. Lithograph and watercolor on paper, stamped with the artist's seal lower left, framed.

Mori Ippo was born in 1798 in Kyushu but lived and worked in Osaka. He studied the Maruyama-Shijo style under Mori Tetsuzan (1775-1841) and became one of the 'Ten Great Disciples' of Maruyama Okyo. Ippo married his master's daughter and was adopted into the Mori family to carry on the Maruyama-Shijo tradition in Osaka after Tetsuzan's death.
