African Tribal Art: Luba People, Zaire, Moon Mask, 19th/20th Century. Carved wood stained Sienna-brown and black, with incised details enhanced with pigment.

Moon masks would have primarily danced in celebrations honoring the appearance of the new moon, a symbol of recognition, hope, and rebirth.
