Maurice Utrillo (French, 1883-1955) Manner of: Montmartre, Place du Tertre. Ink, tempera, and gouache on paper. Signed lower left. A pencil inscription on the backing board reads "Montmartre Paris 20, Place du Tertre. Markings from a previous collector verso. This item is accompanied by unverified documents from van Hassel Gallery.
Utrillo's most frequent subjects were buildings in the Paris neighborhood of Montmartre. He painted several views of Place du Tertre in Montmartre, where he lived. Despite having been shunned by the French artistic establishment during much of his career, he is considered one of the pioneers of The School of Paris, the pre-World War I, modern artistic movement characterized by experimentation and pluralism.

14 x 17 inches framed; 7.5 x 10.5 inches paper.

Good condition with signs of ageing. The paper is lifting from the board, but the paper is stable. The frame is in very poor condition.
