Joseph Glotzer (American, 1914-2007): Clipper Ships. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, in a new frame.

Joseph Glotzer left Europe, fleeing Nazi occupation during WWII, and took up residence in the United States, in Yarmouth, in the Cape Cod area. He was known in Europe as a genre, city and landscape painter. In the Cape Cod area, he painted the local landscape, harbors and the sea. Oddly, he also painted clowns and romanticized pictures of waif like children, a popular and probably lucrative theme in the 1950's. He was, however, best known for his seascapes and harbor scenes and deserves more recognition for his paintings in that vain. This painting is a good example of the seascape genre by him. J. Glotzer's Art Studio, on Route # 28, in South Yarmouth, Mass., was popular destination on the Cape for art enthusiasts for nearly 50 years, especially during the summer season.

26 x 31 inches framed; 24 x 36 inches canvas.

Private collection, Boston.
