John Cosgrave II ( American, 1908-1968): American Whaler. Watercolor on paper, signed below, framed.

John Cosgrave was born in San Francisco, was a renowned magazine illustrator, painter, engraver, writer, and graphic artist, primarily known for his marine subjects. He studied at UC Berkeley, the California School of Fine Arts, and with Andre Lhote in Paris. Cosgrave's illustrations appeared in publications such as Life, Fortune, and Yachting magazines. His painting "Yacht America" was reproduced by the Encyclopedia Britannica. Throughout his career, he exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the San Francisco Museum of Art. He spent most of his career in New York and Connecticut before passing away in Pocasset, Massachusetts.
