Joan Miro (Spanish, 1893-1983): Arlequin Circonscrit, 1973. Lithograph on "Maeght" paper, signed in pencil lower right, "Hors Commerce" proof annotated "H.C." on the bottom left corner, aside from the edition of 75, in pencil, framed. Published by Maeght. Referenced in Maeght 887.

Widely considered one of the leading Surrealists (though he was never officially part of the group), Joan Miró was also a pioneer of automatism: a method of spontaneous drawing that attempted to express the inner workings of the human psyche. Miro used color and form in a symbolic manner, developing intricate compositions and a wandering linear style that combined abstract elements with recurring motifs such as birds, eyes, and the moon.

37.5 x 30.5 inches framed; 28.5 x 21.25 inches sight.

Private collection, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
