African Tribal Art: Bamana People, Mali: Kore Society Hyena (Suruku) Mask, early 20th Century. Carved wood with dark brown patina.

The Suruku mask, with full body costume, takes care of the male initiates of the ‘Korè’ association during their instruction in the traditions of the tribe. It's features(bulging forehead, two very large ears, long nose, piercing eyes, mouth slightly open, are meant to symbolize the supernatural intelligence, vitality and an appetite for learning and knowledge.

Dimensions: Approx. 18.5"H x 8.5"W x 8"D

Condition

Good condition with minor wood loss on the back rim and the front upper lip. Please inspect the photos and videos, which supplement the written description and show the condition of this lot.
