Frida Kahlo (Mexico, 1907-1954) Manner of/ Attributed: Self Portrait, oil on canvas, signed lower right, South American customs stamp verso. Infrared Transmission Photography revealed several original elements of the painting which were changed in the final composition. This style of painting more closely resembles the style she used in commissioned portraits of her affluent patrons.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter best known for her uncompromising and brilliantly colored self-portraits that deal with such themes as identity, the human body, and death. Although she denied the connection, she is often identified as a Surrealist. In addition to her work, Kahlo was known for her tumultuous relationship with muralist Diego Rivera.

Private collection, Peru.

The canvas has multiple areas of paint loss that have been retouched. There is craquelure throughout. There are two pin holes on the left edge.
