Festin des Vice-Rois pres des murs de Kanton. Engraved view on 1 double sheet plate, showing the Royal banquet at the walls of Canton (Guangzhou). Includes reference. Source: Nieuhof, Gezantschap (Van Meurs 1670). Framed.
Nieuhof was part of an expedition from the Dutch East India Company sent to China in the hope of breaking the Portuguese monopoly in that part of the World, and establishing contact with the Chinese Emperor and Court in Canton and Pekin. Nieuhof was there as a Steward, but also instructed to draw everything of interest - buildings, cities etc. His work gives a very early insight into China at that time. This is a print of a Banquet which the delegation attended, with much ceremony - musicians meeting the two ambassadors and their delegation, with the Vice-Roy in the tent in the distance. Behind are the walls of Canton.

13.5 x 19 inches framed; approx. 7.5 x 11.5 inches plate.
