A fringe part of the Wisconsin Surrealists led by Marshall Glasier and John Wilde in the 1930s and 40s, Dudley Huppler was an English professor at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He did not receive formal training as an artist but took up drawing after meeting Glasier and Wilde and created Surrealist drawings that seemed influenced by European Surrealists Yves Tanguy and Jean Arp. He authored two books of Surrealist prose, and one of his drawings was included in a 2000 exhibition, "Surreal Wisconsin," of the Madison Art Center.
