Dripping Well, Hastings: 1850, Rococo Illustration printed by George Baxter (British, 1804-1867 )using the Baxter process: aquatint key plate with oil colors printed from wood engraved blocks. Mounted to paper and framed, verso is marked in graphite. The print is framed with papers from Hartford Fire Insurance from 1876.
George Baxter was an English artist and printer based in London. He is credited with the invention of commercially viable colour printing. Though colour printing had been developed in China centuries before, it was not commercially viable.

Image: 2 5/8 × 4 in. (6.7 × 10.2 cm); Mount: 4 3/4 × 6 5/8 in. (12 × 16.9 cm); Frame 5.75 x 7.5 inches.

Condition

Very aged condition; the paper that the print is mounted to is heavily toned and mat burned; paper loss on the right edge and three corners; the picture is very faded and toned.
