African Tribal Art: Chokwe People, Angola: Mwana Ngulu Mask depicting a domesticated pig. Mid 20th century, with a custom-made display stand.
The mask is hand-carved wood, painted with brown and black pigments and white kaolin. It has iron ear rings, and on top of the head are metal tacks and a coin. The mane is made of strips of fabric. A bright, multi-colored net of knitted yarn is attached to the back and bottom of the mask, as a new replacement for the original raffia costume elements The interior of the mask is lined with fabric.
These masks are used during magical dance rituals in which the dancer emulates aspects of the animal.

Approx. 20H x 9W x 15D, 23H on stand (inches).
