Chang Yu Sanyu (Chinese, 1901 - 1966) Manner of: Blue Chrysanthemums in a Glass Vase. Oil on masonite, signed lower right, framed, illegible text/ numbers in graphite and charcoal verso. Possible study for a larger work.

Motifs in Sanyu's lifelong oeuvre range from nudes, animals to flowers. All his works have minimal compositions, succinct lines as well as audacious and pure colours. Like a poem, his paintings can describe the most delicate feeling with minimal words. Born in a wealthy family, Sanyu began learning calligraphy in his teens under the guidance of Zhao Xi, a Confucian master of the late Qing dynasty.

23 x 20.5 inches framed; 20 x 17.75 inches masonite.

Private Collection, United Kingdom.

Condition

Good, well preserved condition, alligatoring visible in cream painted areas; the masonite is very slightly bowed, all four corners are lifted about one quarter of an inch away from the frame.
