Baga People, Guinea: Helmet Mask depicting a stylized serpent. Carved, hollowed wood cylindrical form with horizontal projection. Finished with brown stain, black and red paint, and remnants of blue and white pigments. The lower rim is lined with incised holes for costume attachment, and a rectangular hole is cut into the section under the tail. Early/Mid 20th century.

The serpent (Kalimbe, or Bansonyi) refers to a protective spirit manifested in the form of a snake that presides over male initiation ceremonies in the Baga culture.
